Information about the maker

The dial is signed Smiths whilst the movement is signed Smiths Astral. In 1931, S Smith & Sons Smiths (motor accessories) Ltd started making clocks in Cricklewood, trading as Smiths English Clocks Ltd. In 1934 they bought the Enfield Clock Company. In 1949 production of Enfield clocks started to be moved to the Smiths factory at Ystradgynlais in Wales. The parent company became know as Smiths Group and is trading today. Astral was the trademark of W& Williamson & Co of Coventry and London. As volume clock production ended in the UK, many of the companies merged in a last attempt to stay profitable, probably explaining why the movements bears both names.

Condition Report

In very good original condition. The case has a couple of very small rub marks that save it from being 'mint'. It is completely priginal throughout. The painted and printed alluminium dial has a few small knock marks between the 4 and the 5. The brass bezel also has a couple of small knocks. Nothing too serious but obviously have to be described for web-selling. The larger photos give a fair overall impression. The movement has not been serviced as it is clean and running well for the full duration.
Cost of Restoration

Non required.
