Description of the item
An attractive and elegant 'Sheraton' mahogany mercury barometer from the Georgian period (early C 19th) Very original throughout. 8" signed dial. An early version of these 'Sheraton' barometers, with the short neck and the side banding applied horizontally. Of excellent quality typical of this period with good veneers, and boxwood stringing. Oval shell and round floral paterae. Red spirit thermometer, cast brass bezel.

Edwin Banfield's 'Barometer Makers & Retailers 1600-1900' lists Ortelli P & Co in Macclesfield 1800-1830. There are also listings of an N Ortelli in Macclesfield, probably related.

Condition Report
We've very sensitively restored this barometer to its former glory, and have photographs prior to the work starting. This barometer came to us with a very soft finish and significant patina, which has been retained. Fully prepared, ready to hang and enjoy. |
