Description of the item
An huge, rare & important 20thC wall clock in a superb mahogany frame made for the GPO. Even more impressive in the flesh, this clock records the time when no expense was spared in manufacturing clocks for the Governemnt agencies. This is only the 2nd clock we've owned at this size and makes a huge statement in any room. Highly original throughout. Dial restoration to be discussed.

Information about the maker & dating
There are no makers marks at all on the clock, which is not uncommon on equipment supplied to the Government. It is made using the very best materials and would have been very expensive. These clocks varied very little between 1880 and 1950. The dating clues come from the Royal Cypher printed on the dial. This (untouched) mark is rubbed / smudged. I've done some research which I'd be happy to share with the prospective owner. In summary it is between Edward VII (1901 to 1910) therefore early, or Edward VIII who reigned for less than a year in 1936. This would make it quite a late but very rare clock, as very few EviiiR cyphers are seen.

Condition Report
The clock is in excellent condition and ready for retail. The mahogany surround has a high polish showing the quality of the wood (better than shown in the photos). Good colour with no breaks. The bezel is original and cast. In the photos it is shown painted black to hide the tarnish. This has since been removed to return it to the original brass finish.
The original dial 'ground' has a several areas of paint loss / flaking and a couple of honest repairs. (see next section). The Royal cyper is untouched. The numerals are original with areas of touch-up. The movement has been recently cleaned. We've checked and oiled it and it is runing very well.
Cost of Restoration
We are happy to include the restoration of the dial in the quoted price. We will not do this work prior to sale, as some customers prefer dials to be left as original as possible. The restoration will take approx 5 weeks. I'm equally happy to supply a 'dial repaint voucher' that the new owner can cash-in at some point in the future.
