Description of the item
A totally original and virtually untouched attractive large wall clock . The dial retains all its original paint and blackwork, giving it great character. Very high quality chain-fusee movement, with shaped shoulders and well turned pillars, requiring winding once a week. In such good order I'd prefer to sell it exactly as shown (and described below). |

| Information about the maker
We don't know who made the clock (it is unsigned as most are) but we know quite a bit about the retailer. Richard Hillaby appears (at this address) in the 1879 Whites Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham trade directory. By 1901 he has moved next-door to number to 211. Information from the Driffield local history indicates he was born in Garton (East Riding) in 1841, recorded as a watchmaker in 1861, lodging in Beverley Lane. By 1881 he is a 'Head watchmaker' employing 4 men. |

Dimensions & Specification
Very unusal case which has attractive oak veneers upon a pine carcass. The oak veneer has either been cut in a complex way or was highly figured, as it has a most attractive pattern. Heavy brass bezel with silvered sight-ring retaining the original 'wavy' glass. 8-day duration chain fusee movement with many early features (shaped shoulders and lopped pillars). 14" steel dial. Blued steel hands.
The overall diameter is approx 46.2cm diameter, approx 16.5 cm deep. (ask me to check depth if crucial). |

| Condition Report
All the components are original. We acquired the clock is really exceptional original condition and would prefer to sell it this way. The case has a couple of small repairs to the veneer which I've tried to show on the large photos. Also the case (with its pine carcass has a little warp to each side. This is difficult to capture on the photos and ranks as character rather than a fault. The dial is very rare in retaining all the original paint and blackwork. There are a few rubs and bubbles but it is sound and clear and MUST be left like this! The colour is slightly whiter (less cream) than the photos indicate. The movement is clean (if a little tarnished). I think it was restored quite recently. I've bushed one pivot (which had been missed) and applied fresh oil. It is in perfect running order and keeping great time. |

Cost of Restoration
Non required. I could 'clean and service' the movement at extra cost, but frankly it is unnecessary and the money should be saved for many years down the line. |
