Description of the item A fully prepared fusee wall clock which we've restored ourselves. Very unusual 'signature' to the dial 'Geo M. Hammer, Library Furnisher, London SE16'. The clock was made by Astral of Coventry (see below). Hammer was either the retailer or customer. Solid oak case made from 8 sections. Original hands and bezel. |

| Information about the maker We can't find any reference to Geo Hammer & Co and are also uncertain what exactly a 'Libary Furnisher' was. We can guess that the clock either hung in Hammer's office (or perhaps showroom, or was supplied to a library with other supplies. The actual manufacturer of the clock was Henry W Williamson Ltd who used the trade name 'Astral'. They were a volume manfacturer of clocks and watches from London and (this one) Holyhead Road Coventry. They went into receivership in 1931 and became part of S Smith & Sons.

| Condition Report We bought the clock in very sleepy and untouched condition. We've fully overhauled the movement in preparation for retail. The case had good colour and required no joinery. The original finish had become rather flakey and this has been revived and now has an excellent soft wax finish. The dial had flaked and would have worsened rapidly (we can supply photos). It has been professionally repainted to the same pattern, including the original bluish tint to the ground colour. |

Cost of Restoration None required. |
