Description of the item

This is a super clock which will have had a very interesting history. Made in England for retail in India, it is made to the best specifications. Retaining the original almost ebonised finish (see below). Excellent original order with just a repair to the base being required (see photos). 8-day fusee movement, requiring winding once a week.

Information about the maker

Founded by Robert Thomas Cooke and Charles Kelvey , Cooke & Kelvey traded 'by appointment to Her Majesty's Government' in India. Set up shop in Calcutta in the year that followed the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny and counted Rajiv Gandhi amoung their clients. Famous for retailing the best silver (C & K became India's answer to London's own Tiffany's and Aspreys), their clocks were also famous with an example still on display at the Calcutta Port Trust Heritage Centre.

Dimensions & Specification

12" painted dial housed in a one-piece mahogany surround. The dial & movemnt have always belonged to this case. Heavy cast bezel with original thick bevelled glass. Good quality movement with chain driven fusee. The is the 2nd re-imported item from India we've bought and both have the same very dark brown, almost ebonised finish, which we think may have been applied to protect against temperature & humidty.

The overall diameter is approx 38cm, 16cm deep.

Condition Report

The 'almost ebonised' finish decribed above is in excellent order and has just been cleaned. The dial reatins its original ground (now nicely crazed) an original blackwork (just how we like to find dials). The base of the back-box has suffered some damage (as shown) and is in the queue for the restorer, with the missing lock to be replaced. The movement is clean, showing little wear and running accurately to time. We can give the movement a full overhaul at additional cost, but it is frankly unnecessary.

Cost of Restoration

Professional repair of the damaged veneer and replacement of the missing lock is included in the price quoted.
