Description of the item

This is a really rare & impressive clock by a well known London maker & retailer. Almost 1metre tall in total, it is superbly constructed of the very best materials, and would have been very expensive in its day. The bottom part of the bracket is detachable, allowing the clock to be table or plinth mounted. John Bennett (later 'Sir') was a famous and flamboyant London retailer, about who we have a lot of information.

Information about the maker

Sir John Bennett was a very successful Clock Watch & Jewelry maker in London. His building in Cheapside stood 5 stories tall. The front of his shop was so famous it was dismantled and rebuit in America. He was at Cheapside from 1846 to 1889 and was knighted in 1872 and signed his clocks accordingly; so this clock dates between 1846 to 1872.

Dimensions & Specification

This clock is made with the best materials to the highest standards. It is VERY heavy. The case is mahogany, carved as shown (see the depth on the 5th large photo). The painted dial is 12" in diameter and covered by the original cast brass bezel and heavy bevelled glass. The movement is 5 pillar and very heavily constructed. It counts the hour with heavy blows to the original case mounted gong.

The overall height is 95cm tall, 56cm wide and 20cm deep.

Condition Report

The clock case is in original untouched condition. The original finish has taken on a light crazed finish but is totally sound. It has been lightly cleaned and then waxed since the photos were taken. There is slight damage to the mahogany trim which surrounds the sound fret in the TOP of the case. The dial retains the original ground and blackwork. There is a touch up repair around the centre hole (see larger photos). The movement has been cleaned and serviced.

Cost of Restoration

Non required. The damage to the top sound fret surround could be improved for £50. Otherwise in top retail condition.
