Description of the item
This is an attractive and original example of a late 18th C longcase clock by Samuel Hill of Sheffield.
We restored and sold this clock last year but unfortuately the customer's circumstances changed, so we were glad to buy it back, and re-offer it for sale.
It has a silvered one-piece dial with attractive engraving. The case is oak.
Dimensions: 7' 5" tall including the finial.

| Information about the maker
Samuel Hill is recorded as working in Totley from 1770. He was born at Dronfield in 1736, son of Godfrey Hill and would have served his apprenticeship c. 1760-1767, although to whom is not recorded although his predilection for round dial clocks suggests that it was with an East Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire maker. He married Anne Swift at Dronfield in August 1769 and settled in Totley (then in Derbyshire) before moving to Sheffield around 1780.
We estimate this clock was made approx 1785.

Condition Report
Fully restored and ready to go. When we bought the clock it was very tired but remarkabley complete and original. We refinished the case, serviced the movement and resilvered the dial.
We have photographic records showing the condition before we started work. We are certain as we can be that the dial, movement and case all started out life together.
